After months, ok probably years of Riley getting every possible cold, WAY to many rounds of antibiotics and being woken up in the middle of the night due to his sleep apnea we decided to say good by to the culprits! For months we talked to him about "giving his tonsils and adenoids away" and every time we went to the Dr. he was filled with fear about having them removed.
When we finally decided to do it we didn't tell him until the night before surgery (I just couldn't imagine the fear he would have had for the 3 weeks leading up to it). Uncle Jared came over and gave him a blessing and everything after that point on went great! He took along the froggy that Grammy sent him and told me "Mom, i am not going to be scared, I am going to be silly", I love that he choose humor to get him through a scary situation.
The surgery was FAST and I was in the recovery room with him in no time! When he woke up he asked me if his tonsils were gone, I said yes and he said "but mom I want them back"! We had to stay overnight so he could be monitored and he managed to eat 9 popsicles and 6 vanilla ice creams, needless to say he was doing great... I have to mention that there was a couple hours where he was a grumpy monster. Part of me wanted to laugh because its so unlike him and I had never seen him act this way and the other 99% of me just wanted to hold him and calm him down but he wouldn't let ANYONE get near him! He was trying to rip every monitor off his body and even tried multiple times to rip out his IV! I just kept trying to distract him with hi Nintendo, ipad games and tv. He finally got to a point where he was somewhat manageable and to my relief Paul came back to give me a break.
Sid knows Riley has an "owie" and has is so sweet to check on him and try to be the nurse, and she sure doesn't mind joining her brother with a bowl of ice cream for breakfast! The hardest part for Riley is the food, he wants to eat but he knows he cant, so we're keeping a list of the things he wants to eat when he's better. Buggy has already lost a few pounds and even we he does eat its not much. I try to load him up with calories in his smoothies and adding LOTS of butter and melted cheese in his mashed potatoes. But mostly he wants ice cream, because its cold and easy to eat. I'm loving all the extra "cuddle me mom" time but my heart hurts knowing how much pain he's in
At church Sid kept patting and rubbing Riley's shoulder to make sure he was ok. It mostly annoyed him but someday he will read this and know that his little sometimes pesky little sis has always loved
him!
Today we ventured to Costco and then did some painting at Fired Up in San Clemente. Aside from his squeeky & raspy voice, you'd never know he just had surgery :)
